The excitement of a new year is upon us, the season of new starts and new goals. Many of us are thinking about which New Year’s resolutions to make. A new exercise plan, healthy eating, self-care, book reading, or budget tops many people’s lists. Why not make a plan for your New Year’s resolutions for better oral health, too?

Here are 5 ideas to help you work towards a healthier smile in 2026:

1. Make an Appointment With a Dentist

If you haven’t been to a dentist in a while, one of the best first steps may be to make an appointment with a dentist for a professional cleaning and exam. A professional dental cleaning can remove stains from foods like tea or coffee and hard-to-reach plaque that regular home brushing cannot.

A regular exam can also help your dentist spot potential trouble areas before they turn into cavities or gum disease. You can ask your dentist for tips and tools that can help you keep your New Year’s resolutions for better oral health in the new year.

2. Brush and Floss Regularly

Dental professionals typically recommend brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once daily. After a meal is preferable, make sure to brush for at least 2 minutes each time and use a brush that is soft enough so that you can brush along your gum line to keep both your teeth and your gums healthy.

3. Make Healthy Food and Drink Choices

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, eating less sugar, and limiting alcohol intake are simple steps you can take towards better oral health and are also healthful for your whole body. It’s important to make healthy snack choices and to brush your teeth after snacking, just as you would after a meal.

4. Find Out More About Braces or Invisalign

If you’ve been thinking about getting braces or invisalign, this could be a great time to make an appointment with your dentist or orthodontist to ask questions and see if this is something that will help you achieve your dental health goals. Doing so can be inspirational and can encourage you to stick with your other New Year’s resolutions for better oral health.

5. Check Out New Ways to Brighten Your Smile

A dazzling, bright smile is likely what we all envision when writing up our New Year’s Resolutions for better oral health. There are many whitening products available, both over-the-counter (such as toothpastes, whitening strips, and gels) and professional treatments by your dental professional. Some over-the-counter products can increase sensitivity, so it’s always best to check with your dentist before trying a new whitening product to ensure it’s safe and right for you.

Call us to schedule an appointment with our dentist, who may be able to help you learn more about this topic and improve your oral health.
